If you are turned down at one house, evaluate your posture and apply at another. There is no stigma or penalty applied by a rejection; it is merely the judgment of the residents as to inviting you into their home.

What is Oxford House?

Oxford House is a democratically peer-run, self-supporting, and drug-free home. Each House represents a remarkably effective and low cost method of preventing relapse. This was the purpose of the first Oxford House established in 1975, and this purpose is served, day by day, house after house, in each of over 2,500 houses in the United States today. The number of residents in a House may range from six to fifteen; there oxford house are houses for men, houses for women, and houses which accept either men or women with children. Oxford Houses flourish in metropolitan areas such as New York City and Washington D.C. And thrive in such diverse communities as Kansas, Hawaii, Washington State, Canada and Australia; but they all abide by the basic criteria.

Modest rooms and living facilities can become luxurious suites when viewed from an environment of alcoholics working together for comfortable sobriety. Yes, there are Oxford Houses in Canada, Australia and Ghana with active interest in England, Bulgaria and other countries. Alcoholism and drug addiction are international problems and Oxford Houses can provide recovering individuals the opportunity to become comfortable enough in sobriety to avoid relapse. Individuals living in an Oxford House learn or relearn values, responsible behavior and slowly, but surely, develop long-term behavior to assure comfortable sobriety forever.

Other Ways to Support Oxford House

The World Council is made up of both alumni and residents of Oxford Houses who are elected by their peers. Electing members to staggered three-year terms of office assures continuity of the 12-member World Council. This assures integrity and Alcohol Use Disorder correct application of the Oxford House system of operations as documented in the Oxford House Manual© and Oxford House Chapter Manual©. Oxford House, Inc. is a separate nonprofit organization that provides support and training to the network of houses to help expand the Oxford House Model. Each has a term limit of 6 months to further support a well functioning democratic environment. At any given time there are about 2,000 Oxford House residents who have served in the military.
